The Rocking Horse Winner : Favorite part!

“I never told you, mother, that if i can ride my horse, and get there, then I’m absolutely sure. Oh, absolutely! Mother, did I ever tell you? I am lucky.”
“No, you never did.”

I’m going to almost cry in this part that Paul told her mother when Paul was dying. Paul is a boy who has special talent. Paul need his mother's love, but he didn’t get it until he died. And he used his talent to get attention from his mother. But, unfortunately, in spite of his effort to be lucky person to get interest from his mother, his mother thought his talent made their family’s image down and told him stop doing. And his mother said to his son very unkindly when he asked her did he ever tell her he is lucky, she answered that he did not tell her before he is lucky even it was last conversation between Paul and her . That means she did not recognize his mind that natural mind of children that want to receive love of their parent until he died.

This conversation includes two important meaning. One is that it presents why Paul did the gambling, another thing is that it presents how terrible his mother is. Paul gamvled to get attention from his mother, but he failed and died. And his mother who always try to keep her image up, did not know his son's mind ever.

"And so the house came to be haunted by the unspoken phrase: There must be more money! There must be more money! The children could hear it all the time, though nobody said it aloud."

Paul's parents always compare everything in their family with their neighbours, and feel bad if neighours' were better than theirs, no matter what that was. Paul's family tried their very very best to cover them with the best stuff they had, and hide the worse, or worst. They didn't even satisified with what the best they had, and always want more and more, not only that, they even shouted before their children. That's not right as a normal human being, especially as a child's parent. They should taught their children the best quality as a well educated person and a gentelman. By that way of Paul's parents' teaching, there's no way for Paul to become a
young humility boy and and a student with open mind.

Oscar Cresswell thought about it. "I'll see the money,"he said.

Uncle Oscar used Paul to earn money, he don't even care about Paul, he just care about money. That was so crazy. A old man used a young man to earn money, that is illegal today. How could he do that? If I want earn money, I may use somebody, but not a child.

I think uncle Oscar's young life was not good. Maybe somebody used him when he was young, that makes him wants to use Paul. There is something similar to that in China. Child working for somebody. That was happening today in China and nobody care about that.

Anyway. I think that was so bad to use a child to earn money. really bad.

Alice Han..

"Now!" he would silently command the snorting steed. "Now, take me to where there is luck! Now take me!" And he would slash the horse on the neck with the little whip he had asked Uncle Oscar for. He knew the horse could take him to where there was luck, If only he forced it. So he would mount again, and start on his furious ride, hoping at last to get there. He knew he could get there.

I think this paragraph is so ridiculous and scary. Paul's mother told him that they are poor because his father is unlucky. she also said money comes from luck. I think she doesn't know about money too. If she knew it, how come she teaches her children false. However if she knew it and told Paul false, she is terrible mother. Paul knows his mother doesn't like him and how the neighborhood think about their family. He is smart and thoughtful child, but he still believes what his mothers saying. So Paul started riding rocking horse even he is too big to ride rocking horse. Paul wanted to go to where the luck was and his mother told him money comes form luck. Paul has special ability. If he riding rocking horse, he knows which horse is going to win in the horse racing. Uncle Oscar used him and earn money from horse racing. Also Paul knew his mother is unhappy with that they don't have enough money. So Paul started earn money for his mother. I think Paul has pure heart, because all the money was for his mother and to make his mother happy. Also he thought if he gives money to mother, he could get her love. Paul has an oedipus complex. This paragraph made big change of this story. Paul bacame a important character in the story. However from this part this story gets darker. That's because of Paul's blind love. He is just a young child and he riding rocking horse for his mother. His pure love made this story darker. And that made me scary.

“It’s what causes you to have money. If you’re lucky you have money .That’s why it is better to be born lucky than rich. If you’re rich, you may lose your money, but if you’re lucky, you will always get more money.”

This part is the most important part to me because this part shows me Paul’s mothers view about luck and money. She thinks luck causes her to have money. This thinking is wrong. Sometimes, luck causes money but not always… and she gives this wrong view about luck and money to her children. It makes her children also have wrong view about luck and money.
I think all the people have same amount of luck. There are not lucky and unlucky person because everyone experienced lucky day and also unlucky day. If there are lucky person they must be didn’t experience unlucky day but it is impossible.
Also I think luck is controllable. We can control our luck because luck doesn’t have exact definition. If we try to think positively, our everyday life will change in to lucky day. For instance, Marvine Stamatakis has 1 dollar and she think she doesn’t have enough money to buy coke but, Brendon also has 1 dollar and he think he have enough money to buy pop-tart and he so excited about it. There are two people have same amount of money, but they have different thinking. Amount of money is important, but the value of money is depends on people's mind
"Mother," said Paul one day, "why don't we keep a car of our own? Why do we always use uncle's , or else a taxi?"
"Because we are the poor members of the family," said the mother.
"........"
"........"
I chose this dialoge because paul's whole life is influenced by this conversition.
Paul's question is very mutural as a child who makes. Usually a child will not notice how many properties does his/her family own. Paul is very good at observe and he is a sensitive child.
Paul's mother is not a responsbility mother. She tells paul about the difficulty of her family and lets paul feel the pressure of being poor. I think good parent should not make the child face the mistake that the parent themself made. Servival of the fittiest, the natural rule of the world never change. paul's parents are not lucky also they are lake of intellegent and the spirit of devoted. Paul's mother force the child to receive the negetive influence of his family is unsmart decision.

"Nobody ever knows why one person is lucky and another is unlucky.'

This is what the woman told her child when he asked her why fathers unlucky. I think it is an interesting quote because it shows her opinion about money and luck. The woman is very obsessed with money. She always wants more money, but she never earn enough to satisfiy herself.
In the story, Paul asks his mother about relationship between luck and money. The woman answeres that money comes from luck. I am surprised that the little child concerned about money because I never understand things about money when I was that young. Paul's parents always wants more money and it affects their children, especially Paul, who is the oldest. I think the mood of the family influenced Pauls emotion and created an obsession of earning money by riding rocking horse.
Also, the interesting thing is how the woman think about luck and money. Sometimes, it is right to say money comes from luck, like the woman thinks. I think luck does not exist only for money. Even person has a lot of money, it does not mean that he or she is lucky if the person has unhappy life. In real life, there are many other things that come from luck, such as friends, good relationship between family members.

The Rocking-Horse Winner

The most impressive part to me in the story was at the beginning of the story that the mother keeps saying that "there must be more money". Although the family had enough money, the mother did not satisfy with what she had because she concerned too much about how others think about her, so she had strong idea that she must show her neighbors that she is having happy and fullfilled life. Therefore the neighbors thought she is a good mother and having happy life but that wasn't really true. Her children and husband were the only people who knew the truth that she doesn't quite like her family. Although she did not say she doen't like her family, they could read that from her eyes.

Because she concerned only about money and how she looks, her son, Paul, had strong obsession that he must make money to make his mother happy. However that obsession got serious so that Paul felt like his house keeps whispering him that his family need more money. Finally he got illness and he could not get away from the idea that he should make more money. Moreover his mother's birthday was comming and he thought he have to do something special for her birthday so the illness became more serious. He made much money by betting at the horse race but at the time his illness was impossible to get back to normal. In my opinion, if the mother realizes her fault and felt sympathy of her son, he could get better. However she did not changed and all she did was just watching her son die. It was very impressive because nowaday many people have similar problem that concerning too much about money more than anything and that blind other things which is the most valuable in their life. If the mother did not keep saying that she needs more money, her son would not die. The greed that she got broughts her son's death. This story shows how tragic when people focus their life on the money and the result that brings. I think the phrase "there should bo more money" that the mother says shows how people in nowadays think and overall the story gives us the lesson that what the most important in life is not monet but love.

"Mother" said the boy Paul one day, "Why don't we keep a car of our own? Why do we always use uncle's or else a taxi?" "Because we are poor members of the family" said the mother. why we are poor? because we are unlucky, and your father is unlucky.
Because of the mother, Paul defines "luck" as money for those he loves. Look at what drives him to seek his "luck". Some of it is his mother's failure to love her family freely and fully. Some of it is her need for more money to buy the luxury stuff to show off,And Paul's mother teach the sense that lucky means money very often. Thus a distorted "lucky" abundant in his world, I don't think it is his fault,This comes directly from his mother, who says the following about luck: "It's what causes you to have money. If you're lucky you have money. That's why it's better to be born lucky than rich. If you're rich, you may lose your money. But if you're lucky, you will always get more money." That is my point.
